When I was a trainee teacher at Ruislip High in greater London I wanted to find a way to help my lower and higher ability extend their thinking and creative skills and the English department showed me the light. They gave me a very tiny bit of paper which had a bubble on it, which they also called a thought Stem. I took the idea and made a bigger version to use in class when kids are struggling. I felt the best way to encourage an all over differentiation was thought stems, as this should expand for higher and help with lower to make progress.
